Who should you commission to carry out your asbestos survey?

We all want to have confidence in the goods and services that we use. Trust is essential whether in the high street, the supermarket or buying as a business. We also want to have reliable public services. But how can there be confidence in the market? How can we be sure of essential standards in the public sector?  The United Kingdom Accreditation Service is the sole national accreditation body recognised by government to assess, against internationally agreed standards, organisations that provide certification, testing, inspection and calibration services.  Accreditation by UKAS demonstrates the competence, impartiality and performance capability of these evaluators.

In a recent publication UKAS has highlighted their concerns that businesses not using UKAS accredited asbestos consultancies are not following Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidance which 'strongly recommends that an accredited surveyor is used to carry out complex type 1, 2 and 3 surveys'.  Whilst it may often seem cheaper to use non-accredited asbestos services, using UKAS accredited asbestos testing and asbestos inspection services ensures that the asbestos specialist you commission has:

  •  Demonstrated their technical competency to undertake the work.

  • The resources to complete the work to the required standards.

  • Demonstrated its impartiality, integrity and quality of service.

  • An adequate, independently audited quality system in place.

  • All necessary safeguards in place (i.e. suitable liability insurance)

Employing UKAS accredited asbestos specialists ensures that you and your business is not exposed to unnecessary risk and gives Duty Holders confidence that they are doing their best to discharge their responsibilities under the Control if Asbestos Regulations 2006 (CAR2006).
